I was more reluctant to make this post than previous ones, because even though reading BL isn’t a guilty pleasure for me anymore, writing this stuff or about this stuff is pretty embarrassing. The whole idea of writing my own boys’ love (or yaoi) story came to me about a year ago; I’m a fujoshi to the core xD so I eventually I thought I should try this genre as well. But easier said than done – I’ve never written anything like this before, so I encountered a number of difficulties. The main difficulty is how porny I want to make the story xD I don’t want to make a porn-without-plot type of BL packed with described in details sex scenes – that’s not my level, I can do better. Still, since I’m writing a story of such a genre, I want it to have some ero stuff that will turn on the readers xD Writing BL is quite a challenge, if you want to create something really good, that’s it.
One more problem lies in the story itself. After reading my fair share of BL (both in manga form & in prose), I shall say that most common flaw is transferring the author’s female psychology onto male characters – that’s why we always have someone blushing and crying. It’s really easy to write, but yet again, when I started writing the story in this way I ended up hating myself for creating something so stupid and generic.
The last problem is the language. With all this stuff going on in my country, I doubt I’ll ever be able to publish a story involving same-sex relationship, so I’m really thinking of writing it in English. Even though I lack skills, this kind of story doesn’t require the amount of imagery I usually require from my own stories, so I may be able to do it. I also want to keep the style as simple as possible, so English may be just perfect. And I feel less embarrassed this way, too.
Now about the story itself. In fact, I ended up with ideas for 3 loosely connected stories – they all have the same setting, and, well, I’d like to go with ‘supporting characters becoming main and vice versa’ sort of thing. Anyway, since I decided to write the whole thing in English, I’ll have to rewrite even the parts I have, so I might as well just start anew.
So, this is the kind of setting I want to use: imagine that there hadn’t been any big conflicts (like, wars) since the 19th century, and the mankind concentrated on high technologies and space exploration, and after some time ended up discovering a method that allows interstellar travels. While many people settled on the newly discovered planets in the outer space, those who stayed on the Earth eventually experienced a kind of information overload and decided to slow down the development, and even revert to the way things were in the 20th – 21st centuries, because it allowed them to be at peace. That act resulted in two different civilizations, different in culture, morals and even appearance.
Now you think that the setting may be too good for BL xD But if I use a sci-fi-flavoured background, I can significantly tone down the emotionality that inevitably comes with this kind of story. At the same time, this ‘dry’ background may put forward the story in the most favourable way.
Now about the stories themselves. First of all, all stories are first-person narrations (I like writing them, but in this case I feel I’m digging my own grave); all stories span a year, though they start and end in different months, so that makes them develop parallelly and gives me additional headache.
For story #1, tentatively titled “The Runaway”, I have half of the storyline planned, and I know how I want to end it, but it still requires a tremendous amount of work. Though I’ve thought a couple of good romantic scenes and of course a hot bathroom sex scene xD The theme of this story is love-obsession, when two people are drawn to each other, but one party doesn’t want to give in and that leads to mutual suffering. I want to go with an insensitive, somewhat cold uke (18 years old), and a cheerful, but rather aggressive seme (24 years old). Opposites attract, that’s it. I also came up with rather complex backgrounds for these two characters. I just need a magic kick of some sort to sit and write everything down.
For story #2, tentatively titled “The Pretender”, I have some scenes planned, but the whole storyline should agree with the storyline of story #1, so I can complete the former after completing the latter. It’s a more down-to-earth story; it involves a hint of incest (but no real incest, mind you – I don’t really fancy this stuff), and some non-con sex (I wouldn’t call that rape, but, well, there are certain circumstances xD). This story will have a tsundere uke (a pretty violent one) and a mischievous, teasing seme. And they’re of the same age (17 years old). The theme is forbidden love, in more than one sense.
For story #3, that doesn’t have the title yet, I have a couple of ideas but nothing written down. I want to make it more porny and concentrate on the physical side of the relationship. And I’d love to throw in some soft BDSM. I want to make this story very playful and full of really embarrassing stuff. I’ve decided on the characters, but can’t define their types yet. I don’t even know when I’ll start writing this story, so everything’s still in the air.
